Central Christian 39
Malvern 32
The team bounced back from the Dalton game in a positive manner by playing with a positive defensive energy and executing in the final minutes to pull away from the Lady Hornets. With the win we improve our season record to 4-5; more important though is how the team responded to its previous game by playing with a determined mindset which increased as the game progressed.
Our play in 1st quarter was key to the win: two TO’s on 12 possessions, Makena and Sydney swishing FT’s and outworking the Lady Hornets at the defensive end. A 7-2 run to end the 3rd and open the fourth was highlighted by Syd’s 2 + 1 and Malesa’s trey giving us a 27-22 lead. From there it was “Kelly time” as she scored 10 of her game high 17 and took control of the offense as a point guard should. Jana and Kelly were clutch from the line combining for 7/7.
Quarter scores: 6-3, 7-16, 10-3 and 16-10. We valued possession of the ball with 17 TO’s on 63 possessions – a significant improvement. From the line we shot 14/19 for 74%; from the floor we were 11/49, 22%, including 3/11 on 3’s, 27%. We embraced the physicality of rebounding with a 38-28 advantage. Defensively we sustained energy beyond the first couple passes to stymie The Lady Hornets.
Kelly had a team-high 17 and Malesa added 8. The rebounding advantage was led by Syd’s 9, Malesa’s 8, Julie’s 7 and Jana’s 6. Kelly also had 3 steals and 2 assists.
The JV team continues its improvement at both ends of the floor competing with energy and gelling as a team although we fell short on the scoreboard 30-35.
The team will be at TCC Monday and plays at home again Jan. 13 vs. Conotton Valley; we appreciated the 15-20 students who cheered us on. J
